I have been creating and thinking about some of the scenes in this book for over 20 years. They started as day dreams on my long runs and bikes as I trained for my first triathlon, while living in Hawaii, in 1985. Through the sweat and miles these dreams slowly became more formalized and crystallized into a story. I kept telling myself it would make a great movie. There are hundreds of movies dramatizing many great sports: none of note with triathlons. Creating a drama involving a sport is one small piece of broadening the understanding and appreciation of that sport and the athletes that participate in them. I believe that triathlons deserve to have a seat among the great sports of the world.

Taking a seventeen-year hiatus from triathlons, the commitments of everyday life dimmed my thinking about the sport and the story. In 2003, a friend prompted me back into doing a race. During my training, the scenes of my story immediately came back to life, stronger than ever. When I described some of these scenes to my kids, they pleaded for me to write it all down. This spark of motivation set me down the path of writing Know Regrets, my first novel. Little did I know this would end up being one of the more difficult and rewarding ventures of my life.

The time for a novel involving the relatively new sport of triathlons has come.
